Photo Recap: Mentor Mixer

Thank you to everyone who attended our Mentor Mixer this Wednesday night! The event was a huge success and it kicked off our annual Mentoring Program. Mentees (freshmen and sophomores) met with mentors (juniors and seniors) in a speed-dating fashion. Our Mentorship directors helped them break the ice by giving them questions to ask each other such as “Who is your favorite architect?” and “Why did you choose to go to school at ASU?”.  Check out the photos below:

Now that you attended the Mentor Mixer, please fill out this survey by Saturday (9/14) at midnight. If you have a specific person in mind, please write down his or her name. If you don’t know who you would like to be paired with, don’t worry! Just fill out the optional questions and we will pair you with your perfect design match. Once we confirm your match, please come meet your mentor or mentee at our Mentor Match event next Wednesday, September 18th, at 6:30 PM in CDN 291!

Photo Recap: Fall Welcome & Freshmen Membership Brunch

In the evening of August 28th, we hosted The Design School’s annual Fall Welcome event along with a few other organizations such as AIAS, GDSA, and IDSA. The event was a great way for people to get to know more about the organizations within The Design School before choosing to become involved.  It was also a chance for students to mingle with people from other design disciplines and possibly meet someone they may end up working  with in future projects.

On August 30th, a few IIDA officers visited a freshmen lecture in the morning and then invited the students over to Senior Studio for breakfast. The officers served them bagels and coffee while giving them a chance to learn more about IIDA and becoming a member.

Don’t forget, our first Mentor Mixer is THIS Wednesday, September 11th, at 6:30 PM in Senior Studio (CDN 291). See you there! 🙂

Welcome Back & 2012-13 Year Photo Recap

Welcome back to school! We are very excited for the events we are planning this year and can’t wait to let you know about them. We currently have a few workshops, mentor mixers, and a firm crawl in the works. To get an idea what our events are like, here are some of the highlights of our last year in IIDA:

Portfolio Reviews & Mentor Mixers:ImageImageImage

We held several mentor mixers and portfolio reviews throughout the year. We held mentor mixers for the upperclassmen to meet with the lower division students, and then paired freshmen and sophomores with juniors and seniors to establish mentor/mentee relationships. These relationships were especially meaningful for lower division students to seek advice regarding classes, the milestone application, or any software help. We also held portfolio workshops that were geared toward freshmen applying for the milestone and juniors looking for summer internships, but they were welcome to all design students as well.

A Firm Crawl:ImageImageImageImage

The IIDA Southwest Chapter organized a Firm Crawl last January and all IIDA student members were welcome to attend. The firms we visited were three of the major firms in Phoenix: Gensler, Smithgroup JJR, and Orcutt Winslow. The firm crawl was especially insightful to juniors and seniors seeking summer internships and work opportunities. We had a fun time riding the light rail together across Phoenix and visiting firms one day. We are currently working with IIDA to plan another Firm Crawl this fall. Stay tuned!

Connect 4:

This spring, we volunteered to assist the IIDA Southwest Chapter with Connect 4, a service event that remodeled the Phoenix Veterans Center and designed apartments for those in need. In the morning, we were given boxes of materials and furnishings which we used to create two beautiful bedrooms by the end of the day.

End of the Year Celebration:

In May, we held an End of the Year Celebration event to honor the faculty members who were not returning this year, such as Donna Atwood, Elaine Jones, and Susan Norman. We also gave out “People’s Choice Awards” to Dr. Beverly Brandt, who was voted as “Favorite INT Professor” and Jose Bernardi, who was chosen as the “Best Studio Instructor.” We also gave Erica Weimann an award, who was voted as “Favorite Senior” by her classmates. The gorgeous glass awards we gave out were made by our very own Merritt Menefee-Johnson of MMM Design Studio, who also teaches the sophomore materials class and junior construction document class at ASU.

Here was just a glimpse into the kind of events we held last year to give you an idea of what we do at IIDA ASU. For more details, please come to the Fall Welcome Event tonight on The Design School Bridge at 6:30! If you have any ideas of what kind of events you would like to have this year, please let us know. See you tonight!

Photo Recap: Connect4

On Saturday, March 2nd, we had the privilege of helping the IIDA Southwest Chapter design rooms for Veterans in need at the Phoenix U.S. Vets Center.

We were given some materials and fabric at the beginning of the day and were told to put together rooms with what we had.

This is the before and after photo of one of the bedrooms.

Here is some of the team opening boxes of the equipment we incorporated in the design.

Hard at work! Azarel, top left, and another participant were assembling the framework for the headboard while Sophie, middle, was creating the its facade with fabric.

More of the team at work, measuring where the headboard should go on the wall and laying out carpet tiles.

Photo Recap: Portfolio Workshop

On March 2nd, we had the privilege of hosting a portfolio workshop, featuring a lecture by the talented viscom designer Kyle Larkin, along with Alpha Rho Chi. The event was geared toward freshmen preparing for their milestone portfolios as well as upperclassmen seeking employment opportunities this summer, or anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of graphic design in general. Various visual communication skills were covered such as appropriate fonts to use, pleasing composition sizes, as well as successful portfolio binding and printing techniques. Afterward, we held a question and answer session as well as an opportunity for mentors to meet with their mentees. Check out the photos below!

Students from other disciplines attended our lecture as well.

Some of the senior interior design students in attendance were on hand to give advice as well.

Photo Recap: Phoenix Firm Crawl

On January 31st, we had the pleasure of attending the Phoenix Firm Crawl, which was organized by the IIDA Southwest Chapter. We began the day at 8:00 a.m. in Tempe where we all took the light rail together to get to Gensler, the first firm we met with at 9. After Gensler, we visited Smithgroup JJR and then took a lunch break at the delicious Corner Bakery Cafe. Our final stop was at Orcutt Winslow at 1 p.m. At each firm we met the designers, received a tour of the office, and had a chance to ask questions.

The firm crawl was very informative and also was a terrific networking opportunity for students who are looking for internships or other employment opportunities this summer. Check out photos below! All photos are courtesy of James Bailey.

The first photo of the day! This was taken right after we visited Gensler.

Heading back to the light rail!

After visiting Smithgroup JJR, we stopped at Corner Bakery Cafe for lunch. Yummm!

All smiles 🙂

Photo Recap: Our Holiday Mentor Mixer Event!

On November 30th, we held a Holiday Mentor Mixer event for mentors and mentees to get more acquainted with each other. At the mixer, we hosted appetizers and deserts, a white elephant gift exchange as well as a gingerbread house building competition. For the gingerbread house building competition, we divided the group into two teams and determined which team’s gingerbread house best interpreted Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. The winning team’s design and other photos are featured below. All photos are courtesy of Erica Weimann.

Photo Recap: Canstruction

IIDA recently collaborated with AIAS and ALSA in an effort to gather can food for the Phoenix Rescue Mission. After the collection period we came together to do a canstruction! Each organization built something out of cans that related to their field specifically.

We gathered a lot of cans, with donation stations set up throughout the design building.

Here is IIDA hard at work. What are we building???

A chair! Thank you Jenny for being our tester 🙂

Here is the IIDA crew who participated in the canstruction. It was a success!

Photo Recap: Meet your Mentor

Last week we held an event where everyone got to meet their mentors. At the event we also had a pumpkin decorating contest. It was a great turn out, and everyone got really creative in their decorations!

Photo Recap: Botanical Gardens

Today some juniors and seniors received an awesome tour of the botanical gardens in Arizona. Meet our tour guide, Paul. He had so much information to share with us about cacti and the Arizona desert.

We learned that Palos Verde trees have a root system that span three times past the tip of their farthest branch.

We also saw some plants that we have never seen before, like this interesting little bud.

We were all wanting to pet this furry little cactus call the Old Man of the Andes.

There were also great pieces of artwork throughout the gardens like these very cool cocoon sculptures.

Here is everyone in the group who came to learn and explore!

Overall it was a great day! After our tour of learning about the desert we discussed how it relates to design through biomimicry. As designers we all need to treasure and preserve the natural environment to the best of our ability.

Photo Recap: Mentor Mixer

Thank you all who attended the Mentor Mixer! There was plenty of networking and design talk happening.

Loving the new posters!

And also our matching t-shirts.

Erica, the executive of mentorship for our chapter, went over the details of the mentoring program.

Lets talk design 🙂

Again, thank you all who came to sign up for the mentorship program. We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, and the pizza!

Sophomore Class Field Trip to Las Vegas!

The ASU Interior Design Class of 2014 visited Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this month for three days (February 1-3). The visit was part of a field trip for their hospitality studio class taught by Susan Norman. Some of the highlights included visiting the World Market Center, the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute designed by Frank Gehry, and CityCenter.  The students were also given a private tour of the Presidential Suites at Wynn and Encore, XS and Surrender nightclubs, as well as the Lakeside Restaurant by the designers of Wynn themselves. Some pictures of the fabulous trip are posted below. 🙂
