Design Inspiration: Nightvision

Nightvision is the result of director Luke Shepard’s travels across Europe, capturing a variety of some of the most stunning structures across the continent to date. The video was made through thousands of photos strung together in post production with the goal to inspire appreciation for these architectural masterpieces.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The pairs were assigned to each other based on the results of the mentoring survey we sent out after the Mentor Mixer event on September 11th. Throughout the year, mentees can meet with their mentors for guidance regarding any software issues, portfolio reviews, the milestone, or any other questions they may have about ASU’s Interior Design program.

Design Inspiration: Skype’s North American Headquarters

This week’s inspiration post might be especially insightful for seniors who are studying workplace design in their INT464 studio class this semester. The office of Skype’s North American Headquarters is located in Palo Alto, California, and it is comprised of 54,000 square feet, which serves approximately 250 employees. According to Design Blitz, the campus demonstrates Skype’s “spirit of innovation in a highly functional yet creative workplace designed to encourage interaction and spontaneity, as well as meet specific acoustic requirements in support of their extensive use of AV.”

In addition, the project also received LEED Silver Certification, making the space innovative both inside and out with its energy efficiency and high tech atmosphere. Check out photos below:

Photo Recap: Fall Welcome & Freshmen Membership Brunch

In the evening of August 28th, we hosted The Design School’s annual Fall Welcome event along with a few other organizations such as AIAS, GDSA, and IDSA. The event was a great way for people to get to know more about the organizations within The Design School before choosing to become involved.  It was also a chance for students to mingle with people from other design disciplines and possibly meet someone they may end up working  with in future projects.

Design Inspiration: Kinetic Rain

In July of 2012, the sculpture “Kinetic Rain” was unveiled at Terminal 1 of the Singapore Changi Airport. Designed by ART+COM, the piece consists of 608 droplets, which are installed above two central escalators. The droplets are made up of lightweight aluminum and are covered in copper. Attached to each droplet is a very thin steel rope that is connected to a computer-controlled motor, allowing it to move up and down to take part in a 15-minute choreography sequence. The visual experience of the choreography varies depending on the perspective of the visitor’s point of view.

To learn more about the piece, click here. Have a wonderful weekend!

Welcome Back & 2012-13 Year Photo Recap

Welcome back to school! We are very excited for the events we are planning this year and can’t wait to let you know about them. We currently have a few workshops, mentor mixers, and a firm crawl in the works. To get an idea what our events are like, here are some of the highlights of our last year in IIDA:

Portfolio Reviews & Mentor Mixers:ImageImageImage

We held several mentor mixers and portfolio reviews throughout the year. We held mentor mixers for the upperclassmen to meet with the lower division students, and then paired freshmen and sophomores with juniors and seniors to establish mentor/mentee relationships. These relationships were especially meaningful for lower division students to seek advice regarding classes, the milestone application, or any software help. We also held portfolio workshops that were geared toward freshmen applying for the milestone and juniors looking for summer internships, but they were welcome to all design students as well.

A Firm Crawl:ImageImageImageImage

The IIDA Southwest Chapter organized a Firm Crawl last January and all IIDA student members were welcome to attend. The firms we visited were three of the major firms in Phoenix: Gensler, Smithgroup JJR, and Orcutt Winslow. The firm crawl was especially insightful to juniors and seniors seeking summer internships and work opportunities. We had a fun time riding the light rail together across Phoenix and visiting firms one day. We are currently working with IIDA to plan another Firm Crawl this fall. Stay tuned!

Connect 4:

ImageImageImageImageImage

This spring, we volunteered to assist the IIDA Southwest Chapter with Connect 4, a service event that remodeled the Phoenix Veterans Center and designed apartments for those in need. In the morning, we were given boxes of materials and furnishings which we used to create two beautiful bedrooms by the end of the day.

End of the Year Celebration:

In May, we held an End of the Year Celebration event to honor the faculty members who were not returning this year, such as Donna Atwood, Elaine Jones, and Susan Norman. We also gave out “People’s Choice Awards” to Dr. Beverly Brandt, who was voted as “Favorite INT Professor” and Jose Bernardi, who was chosen as the “Best Studio Instructor.” We also gave Erica Weimann an award, who was voted as “Favorite Senior” by her classmates. The gorgeous glass awards we gave out were made by our very own Merritt Menefee-Johnson of MMM Design Studio, who also teaches the sophomore materials class and junior construction document class at ASU.

Here was just a glimpse into the kind of events we held last year to give you an idea of what we do at IIDA ASU. For more details, please come to the Fall Welcome Event tonight on The Design School Bridge at 6:30! If you have any ideas of what kind of events you would like to have this year, please let us know. See you tonight!
