Design Inspiration: Kinetic Rain

In July of 2012, the sculpture “Kinetic Rain” was unveiled at Terminal 1 of the Singapore Changi Airport. Designed by ART+COM, the piece consists of 608 droplets, which are installed above two central escalators. The droplets are made up of lightweight aluminum and are covered in copper. Attached to each droplet is a very thin steel rope that is connected to a computer-controlled motor, allowing it to move up and down to take part in a 15-minute choreography sequence. The visual experience of the choreography varies depending on the perspective of the visitor’s point of view.

Design Inspiration: Royal Children’s Hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia redefines healthcare design by incorporating the natural landscape into the space as well as appreciating the healthy psychological effects that art has on children.

Bates-Smart-Billard-Leece-Royal-Childrens-Hospital-1 Colorful, sun-shading petals make up the facade.

A giant fish tank serves as a wayfinding marker and a visually pleasing source of nature.

Designed distractions help patients enjoy their hospital stay.

Design Inspiration: Shore Hotel by Gensler

Two motels on the waterfront in Santa Monica, California recently received a face lift by Gensler.

“Replacing two aging motels, the Shore Hotel boasts 164 moderately-priced guest rooms in two buildings connected by a bridge. The design team’s vision blends the natural landcape and vibrant urban life, taking in the beauty of the sea and embracing the pedestrian activities of the area. A metal-clad trellis over the street side of the courtyard unifies the two wings of the main building, creating an outdoor living room. The lobby walls pay tribute to the beach, while floor-to-ceiling glass sliders maximize transparency. This LEED® Gold certified project completes the profile of Santa Monica’s scenic oceanfront street.” – Shaw Contract Group

Design Inspiration: Cairo Expo City by Zaha Hadid Architects

After presenting their design of the new Cairo Expo City to the Egyptian Prime Minister, Zaha Hadid Architects were announced as the designers for the project in 2009. The Cairo Expo City, which is set to be completed in 2014, will feature a 450,000 square meter city that encompasses areas for conferences, hotels, offices, and shopping centers. Situated directly between central Cairo and its airport, the Expo City will meet the city’s high demand for international conferences and will be able to host a large variety of events.

The design of the Expo City was inspired by the topography of the Nile River. According to Zaha Hadid Architects, the “natural confluence patterns of the Nile delta inspire [their] proposal for an ‘exhibition and conference city’ for Cairo – with a central ‘river’ and extending ‘tributaries’ explored to define circulation and the nature of clustered buildings – each with its own mass, all relating to an overall vision.”
